The 12th annual Middle Eastern Festival of Indianapolis will be held July 20-22 on Friday from 4:00-11:00 p.m.; Saturday from noon to 11:00 p.m., and Sunday from noon to 5:00 p.m. at St. George Orthodox Christian Church, 4020 N. Sherman Drive, Indianapolis 46226.
Adult admission
$3 and children under 12 are free. Free adult admission with the advance purchase of 10 food/drink tickets for $10. Information or directions: call (317) 547-9356 or visit www.stgindy.org/festival.?Middle Eastern food is fresh, healthy, and tasty, says Mina Khoury, a local restaurant owner and native of Bethlehem, who came to this country in 1968. ?Some of our dishes go back thousands of years.? Food options include authentic Middle Eastern dishes, pastries and desserts. Air-conditioned indoor shopping offers Middle Eastern jewelry, groceries, cookbooks and gift items and a bookstore with icons, books, and CDs. The festival website includes a complete menu with prices.
?The dances we perform come from traditional dances that have been passed down from generation to generation. Their roots came from steps that I was taught by my grandmother, who came to America over 100 years ago,? said Diana Najjar, a dance teacher at The Orchard School and choreographer for the festival. Ms. Najjar has scheduled dance performances for the following times:
Friday: 5:00, 6:00, 7:00 and 8:30 p.m.
Saturday: 1:00, 2:00, 3:00, 4:00, 5:00, 6:00, 7:00 and 8:30 p.m.
Sunday: 1:00, 2:00, 3:00, 4:00 p.m.The Rev. Fr. Nabil Hanna, pastor, will offer church tours and answer questions about Orthodox Christianity. St. George Orthodox Christian Church was founded in 1926 and is affiliated with the Antiochian Orthodox Archdiocese of North America. The congregation recently purchased 10 acres on 116th street and plans to break ground for a new church at that location in 2008.
