Designed to introduce young children to the orchestra’s four instrument groups and classical music in general, FUNtastic Classics demonstrates the concept of communicating ideas and emotions through music and includes the opportunity for hands-on experiences with the instruments. With support from the Christel DeHaan Family Foundation, the Penrod Arts Society, and collaboration with Storytelling Arts of Indiana, the series has been redesigned for the summer of 2006. The first three concerts involve brand new music from composer Victoria Bond in conjunction with the narration of three ethnic folktales. These folktales include the African American story How Br’er Raccoon Outsmarted the Frogs, the Hispanic tale Corn in the Rock, and the Long Haired Girl from China. The series culminates with the annual production of Peter and the Wolf which involves the entire chamber orchestra. This program fosters closer connections with music, increasing future appreciation and opportunities, while building audiences. Programs are presented free and open to the public including free admission to the Indianapolis Children’s Museum, allowing families of all economic means to participate.
